Q&A
Q: How is sugarcane planted?
A: Sugarcane is planted from a stalk and placed horizontally, 6-inches into the ground.
Q: What is raw sugar?
A: Raw sugar is unrefined sugar that is not yet food grade. This sugar still contains impurities that once removed during the final refining process becomes completely food grade.
Q: What waste comes from the sugarcane process?
A: We have zero waste. The soil attached to the cane is brought into the mill, collected, and put back on the field. The fiber from the sugarcane stalks is dried into a matter called bagasse. The water content pressed out of the cane is also recycled. The molasses separated from the sugar is sold for cattle feed. Everything is used for a zero-waste process.
Q: How is brown sugar made?
A: Brown sugar is made when molasses is mixed back in with completely refined sugar. Depending on the customers preference for dark brown sugar or light brown sugar will determine the amount of molasses that is added back into the sugar.
Q: How much raw sugar can you get from a rail car of sugarcane?
A: A single rail car can hold 40 tons of cane which is the equivalent to 1 acre. This equates to roughly 2,000 pounds of sugar.
